Rev. Dr. Maurice J. Moyer, age 93, peacefully rose to be with God on Tuesday, March 6, 2012, at Christiana Hospital.

A community leader and civil rights activist, Reverend Moyer founded Community Presbyterian Church on Rogers Road in the early 1950s, serving as pastor for 46 years before retiring in 1998.

He leaves to cherish his memory, his beloved wife, Vivian C. Moyer; a grandson, Thomas Norman Maurice Moyer; former daugher-in-law, Edith Moyer and her sons Oliver and Olin Knotts; Beth Wailes, who was considered a granddaughter; sister-in-law, Gwendolyn Hill; cousin, Russell Good; close family friends, Deborah Wailes and Charles Emory; nieces, nephews, Community Presbyterian Church family; and a host of ministers, community, and friends who dearly loved him.

Rev. Moyer was preceded in death by his sons, Thomas Jerome Moyer and Norman Gayraud Moyer; and siblings, Charles Moyer and Flora R. Moyer Hightower.

Celebration of Life Service will be 6 pm Friday, March 9, at St. Paul UAME Church, 3114 N. Market Street, Wilmington 19802. Viewing will be from 11 am - 5:30 pm. Alpha Phi Alpha Service at 5:30. Private burial in Silverbrook Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Community Day Nursery, 519 Rogers Rd, New Castle, 19720.
